Better known as Botox, Dysport, Bocouture or Vistabel, botulinum toxin is in my opinion one of the biggest breakthrough in the field of aesthetic medicine for the past 15 years.
Botulinum toxin is used to treat wrinkle such as frown lines, forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, but also some wrinkle on the chin, nose, and neck. There are also some other new benefits to these injections.
Its safety when used in aesthetic medicine is optimal. The minor side effects are rare and easily controllable by a proven technique.
The purpose of botulinum toxin injections is to relax (without completely paralyzing) certain facial muscles in order to influence the appearance of wrinkle. When made in a proper way, these injections should not be visible.
Remarkable when the skin is still toned, the results should always aim to maintain a minimum of facial expression to respect the natural appearance of the patient.
When the excess skin is responsible for wrinkles, we will consider using other techniques, such as comblement, peeling or lifting.
The main downside of botulinum toxin is its short action period. After 4-6 months the wrinkles are back to their original state. Which requires us to inject at least twice a year in order to maintain the obtained benefits.
Please note that botulinum toxin may also be indicated in the treatment of excessive sweating.
This technique remarkably improves the patient skin, thus postponing heavier interventions such as facial lifting.
It also helps take care of problems such as hyperpigmentation, which can sometimes be observed after pregnancy.
Hyaluronic acid fillers
Hyaluronic acid fillers are the second tools used in for wrinkle treatments.
This molecule, present in our skin but also in the cartilage of our joints, has a great power of water retention and is therefore essential for proper hydration of these tissues. Over time, the molecules tend to become scarcer which provokes a decrease in thickness, flexibility and elasticity of our skin, with an inevitable impact on the appearance of our wrinkles.
The injection of hyaluronic acid gel, helps to fill some wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, perioral wrinkle, but also allows to reshape cheekbones or lips.
The product stays active, on average, one year.
The main advantage of hyaluronic acid is its safety of use in comparison with other fillers still likely to provoke bad reactions.
